The Lowdown on Latching (a quick taste)

Latch on! Alright, it’s time to get down to the basics. Latching is where the magic begins, and doing it right can mean the difference between a comfortable, enjoyable experience and one that leaves everyone frustrated. A good latch is the foundation of nursing, whether milk is flowing or not. Think of it as the handshake of connection — firm but gentle, precise yet natural.

The mouth should open wide, like a yawn, taking in not only the nipple but much of the surrounding areola. The lips should seal outward, the tongue pressing rhythmically to create a soothing wave of suction. It shouldn’t pinch or hurt — when the latch is right, both partners settle into a calm rhythm that feels almost meditative.

Use your hands: gentle support can make a world of difference. Cup the breast, adjust the angle, and keep communication open. If something pinches or if the rhythm feels jagged, pause and say so. Latching well is more than technique; it’s a practice in tuning in.
